When to Book a Maternity Session

Expecting a baby is one of the most exciting times in a family’s life, and capturing that special moment with maternity photos is a wonderful way to document the journey. But, when to book a maternity session is a question that often crosses the minds of expecting parents. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best timing for your maternity photos, the ideal pregnancy milestones to capture, and how to ensure you get the most out of your maternity shoot.

Best Timing for Maternity Photos

The best time to book a maternity session is typically between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. During this window, you’re likely to have a beautiful baby bump that is rounded and noticeable, but you’ll still have enough energy to enjoy the photoshoot without feeling overly uncomfortable.

  • 28-34 Weeks: This is when most expecting moms feel their best while showcasing a noticeable baby bump. You’ll have enough time to book and plan your session while also allowing some flexibility in case your baby arrives earlier than expected.
  • 35-37 Weeks: Some women feel great during these final weeks, but you may also experience fatigue or swelling. Consider your comfort level and potential changes in your body as you near your due date.

Bonus tip: It’s always a good idea to schedule your maternity photos several weeks ahead of your preferred timeframe to ensure availability, especially during busy seasons.

Benefits of Booking Early

  • Guaranteed Availability: Photographers’ schedules can fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons such as spring and fall. Booking early gives you a better chance to secure the date you want.
  • Stress-Free Planning: Booking a maternity session ahead of time allows you to plan outfits, locations, and other details without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
  • Room for Flexibility: Babies don’t always arrive on schedule, so scheduling your maternity session in advance gives you a bit of flexibility in case your baby comes early or you need to reschedule.

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session

Once you’ve decided on the timing for your maternity session, it’s time to think about how to prepare for it. Here are some tips to ensure you’re ready:

  • Choose the Right Location: Whether you’re considering a beautiful outdoor shoot at a local park, an in-home lifestyle session or a cozy studio setting, make sure your location fits the vibe you want for your photos. I love how Chase and Abby decided to do their Maternity session on their hops farm. Pick a location that unique to you and your growing family.
  • Outfit Selection: Wear something that accentuates your bump and makes you feel beautiful. Soft fabrics and form-fitting dresses or tops are often great choices for maternity photos.
    • Bonus tip: If you find your outfit well ahead of your session date, keep in mind that your bump wil grow! So you may want to buy the next size up just as a back up plan.
  • Bring a Support Person: Whether it’s your partner, a close friend, or family member, having someone to support you during the session can help you feel more relaxed and confident.

I believe in real moments and chasing sunsets. In the kinds of images that remind you of the joy that can be found in the simplest of moments together. I believe in images that are itching to be printed, placed in beautiful frames, and hung on walls for years to come.

I believe in powerful love. Above all, I believe that love is a powerful force in the universe, and I want to preserve true love, beauty, light, and all the moments in life.
