Summer Family Photos in Eugene, Oregon

There is something special about summer evenings in Oregon. The days feel a little longer, the air is warm, and families naturally spend more time together outdoors. It was so fun to reconnect with the KIng family after our daughters spent a year cheering together for our local High School Cheer team. We met me for their summer family photo session in Eugene, Oregon, it was one of those evenings that reminded me why summer is one of my favorite seasons for family photography.

We chose an open field filled with soft grasses and golden light, creating the perfect backdrop for a relaxed and playful session. Rather than focusing on perfectly posed photos, we spent the evening playing, laughing, and giving the kids space to simply be themselves. Those unscripted moments often become the images families treasure most years later.

Why Summer Is a Beautiful Time for Family Photos

Summer family photos have a timeless quality that never goes out of style. The vibrant greens, warm sunshine, and long evenings create a naturally beautiful setting that feels effortless and inviting.

For families with young children, summer can also be one of the easiest seasons to schedule a session. School is out, schedules are a little more flexible, and kids tend to arrive feeling relaxed and ready to play. Instead of rushing from one activity to the next, families can slow down and enjoy the experience together.

One of my favorite things about summer sessions is the freedom they provide. Children can run barefoot through a field, parents can cuddle up with their little ones in the grass, and everyone can simply enjoy being together without worrying about cold temperatures or unpredictable weather.

The Magic of Golden Hour

The King family’s session took place during golden hour, the hour before sunset when the light becomes soft, warm, and incredibly flattering.

Golden hour is often considered the best time of day for family photos because it creates a beautiful glow that adds warmth and depth to every image. Harsh midday shadows disappear, skin tones look natural, and the landscape takes on a dreamy quality that photographs beautifully. It’s by far one of my most favorite times to schedule family photos sessions.

A Photographer’s Tips for Golden Hour Family Photos

One thing many parents don’t realize when planning summer family photos is that golden hour happens much later in the evening than it does during other times of the year. In Eugene, Oregon, summer sunset sessions often begin around 7:00 or 7:30 PM, with the best light appearing shortly before sunset.

If you have young children with early bedtimes, that timing can feel a little intimidating. The good news is that with a little planning, most kids do wonderfully during evening sessions.

My biggest recommendation is to keep the day leading up to your session as relaxed as possible. Avoid packing the schedule with activities, errands, or events that might leave everyone feeling tired before photos even begin. Instead, think of your session day as a slow day. Spend time at home, enjoy a quiet afternoon, and give everyone plenty of time to recharge.

For little ones who still nap, I always recommend prioritizing a longer nap if possible. A well-rested child is far more likely to arrive happy, playful, and ready to explore. Even older children who no longer nap often benefit from a slower day with some downtime before the session.

I also encourage families to bring a few simple snacks and water along. Sometimes a quick snack break can make all the difference, especially for younger children who are staying up a bit later than usual.

The truth is that many parents arrive worried their children will be too tired for evening photos. More often than not, the opposite happens. Once kids are outside running through a field, cuddling with mom and dad, and playing together, they settle into the experience naturally. Some of the happiest, most connected family photos happen during these warm summer evenings when everyone slows down and simply enjoys being together.

And from a photographer’s perspective, the extra effort is almost always worth it. The soft golden light, warm glow, and beautiful summer landscapes create the kind of timeless images families love for years to come.

Preserving This Season of Life

As a mom myself, I know how quickly the years seem to pass.

The days can feel long when you’re in the middle of them, but somehow the seasons fly by. One day you’re carrying your toddler on your hip, and before you know it they’re running ahead of you, growing more independent with each passing year. Our own daughter is entering her senior year this year and it’s hitting me like a pile of bricks.

Family photos are about more than creating beautiful images for your walls. They are a way of preserving the little details you never want to forget. The way your child reaches for your hand. The gap-toothed smiles. The way everyone fits together in this exact season of life.

Years from now, these photographs will become reminders of what everyday life felt like. They will tell the story of your family as it is right now, not just how everyone looked, but how it felt to be together.

That is what I hope every family takes away from their session: not just beautiful photos, but tangible memories they can return to again and again.

I believe in real moments and chasing sunsets. In the kinds of images that remind you of the joy that can be found in the simplest of moments together. I believe in images that are itching to be printed, placed in beautiful frames, and hung on walls for years to come.

I believe in powerful love. Above all, I believe that love is a powerful force in the universe, and I want to preserve true love, beauty, light, and all the moments in life.
